01 - Combine grape juice, sugar, cinnamon stick, star anise, cloves, vanilla bean, and orange zest in a medium saucepan. Bring to gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar completely dissolves.
02 - Carefully add pear halves to poaching liquid, ensuring mostly submerged. Add water if necessary to cover. Simmer gently for 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally, until tender but not falling apart.
03 - Remove pears with slotted spoon and set aside. Increase heat and reduce poaching liquid for 5-10 minutes until slightly thickened and syrupy. Discard spices and orange zest.
04 - Return pears to syrup or arrange on plates, drizzled with warm syrup. Garnish with fresh mint leaves and whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
